There is a ton of hype about HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training. While it sounds daunting, HIIT workouts are cardio workouts that take you out of your comfort zone for a hard and fast interval followed up with a slower or resting recovery interval. There is an incredible amount of research about the efficacy of HIIT workouts as well as who should be doing them and for how long. Unless you are under a doctor's supervision for heart related issues, HIIT can be done at any age since you are in control of your workout intensity.
During a HIIT workout, your heart rate will quickly increase based on your personal output. The rest period gives your body the opportunity to slow the heart down. These intervals will create a more intense workout that is usually shorter than a steady cardio output such as walking or running at the same pace for a set period of time.
HIIT has been linked to boosting metabolism, fat loss and muscle gain. Plus, your body can continue burning calories at an increased rate for an additional 2-24 hours after your workout.
